What Is Pay-Per-Click?

Pay-per-click (PPC), also referred to as "sponsored links" or "sponsored ads," is a method of advertising used on online search engines, blogs, or other commercial web sites. Advertisers pay for the premium placement of their links among search results or related text, and are only charged if the user clicks through these links to their web site. These premium links are often based on keyword matches that advertisers will bid for in an attempt to predict their target market.
Why Use a Pay-Per-Click Service?

Relevance. Because PPC services are often keyword-based, their appearance is generally associated with web page content or search result content. Instead of your sponsored link appearing randomly or amid unrelated data, PPC drives more focus for matched content.

Cost effectiveness. As the name implies, the advertiser only pays for the PPC service each time a customer clicks on their sponsored link. If the customer does not click on the link, there often is no charge to the advertiser.

Get noticed. PPC is one of the very few ways that businesses can influence what appears on web sites and search engines. Paying a premium for these sponsored links may make the difference between a customer noticing your ad and being lost among a sea of search results.
What to Look for in Pay-Per-Click Services:

Size of the network. Naturally, mass advertising is most effective in larger arenas, and the larger that base is, the more potential customers will view the ads. Make sure that your PPC service has an associated network expansive enough to place your sponsored links in enough places to be effective.

Per-click price. As the revenue method for PPC services is the user’s click on a sponsored link, the cost of sponsoring that link is the primary billing method. Some services require a minimum price for each click (such as $0.01 or $0.05) whereas others have no minimum and allow the price to float via a client bidding system.

Keyword assistance. PPC services use keyword associations to place sponsored links with relevant content on various web pages and search engines. Advertisers can often bid on keywords to ensure higher placement on the results page, and some PPC services will offer guidelines and online applications for selecting the most useful keywords.
